Step 1  Grievance Type & Issue
Select the violation category and describe what management did wrong.
New steward? Start here
Pick the violation category that fits best — the specific contract articles get attached for you. If multiple violations apply (e.g. discipline + steward rights), pick the most serious one. Mention the others in the description below.
How to write a strong description
Use the 5 Ws: Who did what, What exactly happened, When (date + time), Where (station/route), Why it violates the contract. Avoid opinions — stick to facts. Example: “On 5/27, Supervisor Smith assigned Route 4015’s overtime to junior CCA Jones instead of senior OTDL carrier Bell, without explanation.”
Fields marked * are required
Step 2  People & Dates
Identify all parties and key dates. This populates the package with specific names and computes NALC time-limit deadlines.
The 14-day clock matters most
The Informal Step A discussion must happen within 14 days of when you (the union) first knew of the violation. Miss this and the grievance is barred under Article 15.4.A. The Discovery Date field below starts that clock.
When the violation occurred
When grievant learned of it (starts 14-day clock)
When grievance is/was filed
â° NALC Time-Limit Deadlines (Article 15)
Time limits are calendar days. Missing one may bar the grievance  Article 15.4.A.
Carriers who observed the incident or have relevant knowledge
